Facts about Latvia

Latvia is located between Estonia in the north and Lithuania in the south on the Baltic coast. Inland, it also borders Russia and Belarus. 45% of the country is covered by natural forests, and the coastline stretches over 500 kilometers of long sandy beaches.

The country is rich in history, culture and architecture. In 2014, Latvia’s capital, Riga, was named European Capital of Culture. The country is also famous for its folk song and regularly holds the Latvian song and dance festival.

What to see in Latvia?

Riga’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a beautiful city with winding cobbled streets. Here are many exciting museums and art galleries, a vibrant nightlife and many cozy restaurants and cafes. Riga has the largest concentration of German art nouveau architecture in Europe.

Outside of Riga there are many interesting cities and regions. Jurmala is the largest resort on the Baltic coast and is only 25 kilometers from Riga. Jurmala is also famous for its healing spa treatments. Kuldige is known as the Venice of Latvia because of the many rivers that run through the area. It is a beautiful old historic town and has one of the oldest brick bridges in Europe.

Cesis is a charming town with cobbled streets, historic wooden buildings and a 16th-century medieval castle. The Museum of History and Art here is worth a visit. Gauja National Park offers diverse nature with its many cliffs and caves and houses 500 cultural and historical monuments. In Dunte you can visit the Munchhausen Museum, which is based on the legendary Baron Von Munchhausen who lived in Dunte.
