Hungary is a country that became a republic in 1989 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. More than half of the country is flat. The highest parts are in the Carpathians, which border Slovenia. Hungary boasts the largest lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton. The main waterway is the Danube river.
